Origins
What is an “Amphlett”?
I have come across several different explanations regarding the origin of the Amphlett name. Some sources suggest it has French origins, while others believe it may relate to a group or tribe living near the River Severn. Another interpretation points to an Old English origin.
One possible meaning comes from the Old English words:
“Hamm” or “ham” – meaning a river meadow, enclosure, or settlement
“Feld” or “feld” – meaning open land or field
Over time, the spelling of the name changed through local dialects and medieval record keeping, evolving into variations such as Amflet, Amflett, and eventually Amphlett.
According to John Amphlett of Clent, the name may also be connected to the area around Holt Fleet near Ombersley, with links to the Dobunni and later the Hwicce tribes.
The phrase “the river people” often appears in discussions of the name’s origins, suggesting a strong historical connection with the River Severn. My own DNA results seem to support this connection, showing a high percentage of Celtic ancestry linked to tribes from the Worcestershire area.
NB: I will add more to this topic as my research continues.
